Friday 9th October saw some "interesting" fashion outfits on display, as those in the know made their way to Skerries Sailing Club for the Bad Fashion fund raiser night.
It was a call to arms - Cast off good taste, throw on dodgy dungarees, luminous leg warmers
and savour the cachet of crimplene. Its time to put the "shun" back
into "fashion".
People were invited to shine a torch into the darker corners of their wardrobe:
"Dust off those velvet slacks, put on the shirt that gave your
girlfriend headaches and nausea, and let out those leg warmers that
combined eye-watering colours with the ability to cut off your
circulation below the knee. In other words, wear as few or as many of your favourite fashion disasters as you like."
A total of just under €700 was raised by the event.
A big thank you to Olive delicatessen and to Red Island Wines for their most generous sponsorship of the raffle prizes. Thanks also to Skerries Sailing Club for hosting the event.
You can read more about the evening as it was reported in the Fingal Independent...
The magnificent fireworks display, celebrating the beginning of the Skerries Soundwaves Festival, lit up the sky at the Skerries Harbour, and set the scene for a legendary comedy night held in Blue Bar.
First up, Damian Clarke, a 31 and a half year old, native of Australia had the audience in fits of laughter with his hilarious take on life in Ireland, particulary his comic dissection of Irish place names.
Gearóid Farrelly, current holder of the Bulmers Comedy Festival award and a regular on the Irish stand-up circuit was outstanding . Gearóid, clearly on top of his game, cruised effortlessly through his 25 minute set recounting tales of life growing up in Finglas. One to watch and is destined for the International scene.
Sketch act - “Ghost Train Willy” were up next and their hilarious sketches included a training course for bouncers, an alternative radio station where the weather presenter gave a frank, realistic and extremely funny view on the weather in Ireland .
Robbie Bonham closed out the evening. Robbie is a regular headliner in Ireland’s Laughter Lounge and deservedly so. His self deprecating comments had the audience almost on the floor with laughter.
Proceeds for the evening went to help the fund-raising efforts of the eight Skerries residents who, next month, will embark on a 12 day trip to Ethiopia. The Skerries Trekkers are self funding the costs associated with the trip, but are hoping to raise as much money as possible to support the 5 year development programme that the community of Skerries has been supporting since December 2006. The trip to Ethiopia will include a visit to the development programme taking place in Sodo as well as a trek in the Simean mountains.
“Our thanks to John Nealon, Blue Bar for the use of his wonderful venue to stage the Comedy Night, Stack’s Pharmacy, the main sponsors of the Skerries Trekkers, Luke Moriarty for providing wine on the night and to the many people and businesses who provided raffle prizes”, said Shea Kelly one of the Trekkers.
